Horn malfunction

Post by Mike R »

So I just wired new horns into my 67 250. All fine and dandy, except the horn ring refuses to work. I've tested the horn right to the battery leads , I replaced the voltage regulator. I don't know where the problem is. I want to line from the horn ring to the relay but some of the lines run from the relay, to the alternator. Any advice?

Is the steering wheel close enough to the column that the contacts touch?

I believe so, I took the whole thing apart and even cleaned it to see if that was the problem but that didn't help. The blue wire yellow stripe was cut at the base of the column so I reconnected it, and still that did nothing.

Also I don't understand the relay. How does it have three prongs? I am still low on the learning curve but my basic physics knowledge tells me that with a positive and negtive current there should be four prongs. Is it grounded by the bolt holding it in place?

I really need a test light...

The horn button provides a ground... take a length of wire and short the button contact to ground to see if it sounds off. If so, then the steering column's ground is either missing or is electrically isolated.

Assuming the power side is good then try this: Install/clip a jumper wire from the steering shaft to the other side of the rag joint and then attempt to honk the horn.

Mike R,

Your first post makes it sound like you bypassed it, and if so, this won't be any help. But if not ... There's a wire at the rag joint connecting the steering column to the steering box. The rag joint isolates the steering column. Check to make sure the wire is still there. It might not be an actual wire; it might be a bent piece of metal.

basketcase0302,

Great graphic! I'm working on my horn as well, and you always know which graphic to post!

Like HIOSilver stated above, the horn button simply grounds the horn to make it work. If you look at the above diagram one wire to the relay is the 12 volt hot / the second wire is the lead to the horn(s) and the third wire goes to the switch-and yes as far as I know if the relay isn't grounded to the radiator support it won't work. Joseph, I am just a messenger-please by all means thank Keith for providing everything here. I'm glad to help in any way I can, simply to keep another old ford truck on the road.
