Starting issues 72 f-100

Post by mrchainsaw91 »

Recently i replaced the starter, alternator, and battery. Truck runs fine for a few days sometimes a couple of weeks. Went outside tonight to move the truck and it wouldn't start. not sure what the problem is. starting to get extremely annoying. the wiring in the truck looks a little rigged. not sure whats going on.

What's the condition of the battery cables? What about the engine and chassis grounds? Has the ignition switch ever been replaced? Sometimes the contacts get fussy resulting in a no-start.

I suggest correcting all the questionable wiring and so-called "repairs" to eliminate the unknowns. Do a full systems check of every electrical circuit and go from there. POs are notorious for connecting to the most convenient point in the electrical system rather than identifying and using the correct circuit. On my rig I had wires that went to nowhere, household wire nuts holding splices, and duct tape in place of electrical tape or heat shrink.

Also check to make sure the solenoid is grounded to the inner fender well / battery cable condition going to the starter (is the cable connection tight on both ends) / battery cable tight from battery to solenoid.
Do you have a voltage meter?

When you say it will not start is the starter turning over the motor or not.. a little more detail if the start is turning over the motor then it has something to do with ignition. if the starter is not turning over then we have a electric problem.. to make it quick and short take a piece of wire and jumper across the solinoid from one side to the other if the starter engages then you have a ignition switch or wiring problem if it doesn't then you have a battery problem see how much voltage you have in the battery if the battery is low again and you have replaced it then you have something draining it. it's time to break out the test light and take your positive clamp off the side of the battery and put the test light inbetween the battery post and the battery clamp if the test light comes on then you have something draining the battery down so now you need to track that down and find out what is doing it..

I checked the wires to the battery and the starter. They look good. When i try starting the truck it makes a clicking noise. Checked my battery level and it said low. There is so many wires i dont even know where to begin.

Adjust your neutral safety switch, if you have one.

Okay so I'm taking that the starter soleniod is clicking. Usually the battery is to low to engage the starter so you get the soleniod clicking. If you put a new battery in it and it started right up then we know nothing is wrong with the starting circuit. We are back to the what is killing the battery. If you have a battery charger that would great but just disconnect the battery let it sit for a day and then reattach and see if it starts then you know something is killing the battery if you just bought that battery it should be good enough just by disconnecting it will regain it charge. Then start looking at things like what has been added that wasn't factory like radios amps anything and disconnect it. If you have a test light it's the easy way to start looking for a drain.
