charging problem with new regulator and alternator

Post by amanitapat »

Just replaced regulator and alternator in a 67 ford 500 flatbed with a 352 engine. It was a 3 wire system without a stator wire. The wire coming from the stator regulator side is green with red stripe. Wire schematics say this wire goes to the ignition. I want to swap this green with red stripe and put it in the "I" slot on the regulator and put a stator wire to the alternator in its place to make it a 4 wire system. The new alternator has a stator hookup but so did the last alternator I replaced. The truck will drain the battery in an hours running time with lights on. The system is new and the wires have been traced and grounds have been checked. The battery won't charge.
Any thoughts?/ The truck has been sitting for 10 years but has been run a few hours each year. I don't think I ruined the new regulator because all the wiring stayed the same., Any help would be appreciated....

When its running take a multi meter set to VDC and put your probes on the battery terminals and see what kind of voltage your getting at the battery when its running. It should be 13-14volts. If you see that kind of voltage then the problem might be the battery itself or just a good ol fashioned voltage draw and you would have to find the defective wiring or componet.

Thanks, I feel embarrassed cuz I took the dash apart and traced ALL wires and found the S wire from the VR unplugged at the ignition.

Done Deal, Takin it for a test drive now.
