Truck wont start with key

Post by icecreamfireman »

I just did a motor and tranny swap in my '67 f100. It has a rebuilt 352/com. Everything is hooked up (I think) but the starter wont engage when I turn the key, I have to arc the starter lead across to the hot wire to get it to start. Any suggestions? I have already replaced the solenoid.

Ps my oil pressure and temp gauges aren't working either. Thoughts?

Thanks

I am thinking you may have missed hooking up one of the wires that runs from the ignition to the solenoid. Have any loose wires under the hood? As far as the guages, I would check connections at the sending units and on the back of the instrument cluster. If those connections are good then most likely the sending units are bad. Did they work prior to the rebuild?

The rebuilt motor and tranny came out of a parts truck. I only drove it once, but am pretty sure the guages all worked. As for mine, everything worked up to the day the motor died. I am thinking it is a wiring issue. I have one wire that I wasnt sure where it went. There are 3 coming out of the firewall. 1 went to the coil, the other two I wasnt sure where they went. Electrical has never been my strong suit. Where are the sending units located? Perhaps they aren't hooked up either. Thanks

Ok, so I've figured out part of my problem is that the parts truck that the new motor came out of had been totally rewired, so nothing was the same. That plus the fact that I don't really know much about electrical, hahaha. Anyway, I found the wiring diagrams on this site and read through them and figured out the gauge issue. Still trying to figure out the ignition though

Those other two are very likley your sending unit wires. The good thing about our trucks is there is just not a lot of wires under the hood. The temp sending unit is in the top of the intake manifold near the distributor and the oil pressure sending unit sould be on top of the oil filter housing. Also if both motors are FE's then you should be able to swap the sending units if you need to.

Where you able to fix the starter issue?

Thanks. I read through the wiring diagrams in the tech section and figured out exactly that. I hooked the wires up where they belong, so hopefully that cures that issue. As for the starter I am still stumped. I am wondering if maybe I disconnected the wires for the neutral safety switch. That's where I'm going to start anyway, and hopefully it works.
