External vs Internal regulator
Wayyy back in the generator days an external regulator was needed. In the 60's when everything went from DC generator to AC alternator an external regulator was still needed. Then internally regulated alternators came out negating the need for the external reg. My question is this. If a man changed out an externally reg alt for an internally reg one what changes would have to be done to the wiring? Just unplug the external reg? That would obviously be a simple solution but nothing seems to be simple anymore.

look at the 3g alt upgrade thread stickied in this forum. it is essentially unplug the reg\alt and replace it all with an internally regulated one.

Just thought I might mention for some folks reading this that are looking for a little more reliability for your daily driver, the last external voltage regulator Ford made was an electronic "solid state" version and is a plug in replacement for the old style mechanical ones that came on these trucks originally. They are economical to buy, just as the old style alternators. Just ask your auto parts clerk for an electronic regulator, they should know what you mean. This may just be the quick and easy fix that some drivers are looking for to keep them out on the road, and out of the shop. If you find your system over taxed from all the new electronics you've added to your vehicle, an upgrade to the newer internally regulated alternators, might then be worth your time and effort.

Just ask for a regulator from a 77 Granada with a V8....
That will keep the counter monkeys from throwing poo because they don't have an 'application' ...
They should put up glass between the customers and the counter monkeys to keep us safe.
