Wiring harness

Post by Rattler12 »

I am doing a ground up resto on my grandfathers 68 F 100 and am looking to replace the entire wiring harness. I doubt an OEM replacement is available from Ford on that old a vehicle but am looking for an as "original copy" as I can find. Everything I have found online looks to be kinda of a half way effort. can anyone out there lead me in a direction?

Edit....Sorry for the post on a subject that was addressed a few posts down. I should have "read ahead"

Don't know if your Edit comment meant you found a solution or not...but here's what I did when I was in your shoes...

I kept my eye out in FORDifications Classifieds and slowly but surely I found EVERY wiring harness I needed from our members. Took patients, slow and steady paid off big time.

Hope this helps you...

Many segments of the 68-70 harnesses are compatible. Best scenario is to get the complete setup in good shape (dash and engine compartment harnesses with matching cluster wiring) from the same parts truck. The rear harness is the same all the way through with the exception of some extra wires included on the camper special models. If absolute originality isn't a concern, you can upgrade to the 71/72 dash and engine harness/cluster as these have built in improvements over the early harnesses like fusible links. Going with the newer harness doesn't create any majorly obvious changes and usually only a purist would notice.

Thanks for your help guys. Yesterday I got out the old harness and went through identifying the various circuits and it's really not in that bad of shape. Only one or two "splices" with wires not of original color code. I went ahead and rewrapped everything that was OK with a couple of rolls of electrical tape so will be using the original after all.Are color coded wires still available ie red /blk stripe, red/blue stripe etc?
