Duraspark swap
Can someone point me in the right direction as far as swapping to duraspark is concerned. I have a duraspark dizzy from a non Fe motor plus all the wiring and a MSD 6AL box. I just wanna know how straight forward the duraspark swap from dizzy to dizzy is.

Re: Duraspark swap
You do not need any of the engine harness from the donor vehicle. Follow the diagram on page 35, using MSD harness #8860...> http://www.msdignition.com/uploadedFile ... pn9615.pdf
You do not need harness #8869, like the page states.

Re: Duraspark swap
Thanks, but thats not really what I was asking about. I'm asking about putting all the durakspark innards from one dizzy to another.BobbyFord wrote:You do not need any of the engine harness from the donor vehicle. Re: Duraspark swap
CNM67, I've never done this swap myself but from what I understand (of course I could be incorrect) you simply (yeah right, 'simply' always scares me) remove all internal components from the Dura Spark Dizzy, remove the same internals from your standard points dizzy and then install the Dura Spark parts into your existing Dizzy.
All things electrical and I don't mix well (out of fear and ignorance on my part for sure) so I just bought a complete Dura Spark system that was in a 1975 F series with an FE motor. Nope I still have NOT installed it in my '70 yet, but comparing the Dura Spark Dizzy to one of my spare points dizzy's I can see that, other then the guts being different between the two, outwardly they are IDENTICAL so I now believe that what I've heard about just swapping the guts has a high degree of merit to it.
Just my thoughts...
EDIT: My experience is with two FE dizzy's but I have been led to believe that ANY Ford Dura Spark dizzy set up will work. I.E.: 351M Dura Spark dizzy guts will fit into an FE dizzy as an example. Sorry for forgetting to mention this.

Re: Duraspark swap
I swapped the innards from a 351M/400 Duraspark dizzy into my 390 points dizzy and yes, it is a straight swap.

Re: Duraspark swap
I don't believe the 351M/400 distributor has the right shaft length, mounting hole dia or housing to fit in the FE block and location.

Re: Duraspark swap
Yes, Ford V8's of that era including 260-289-302, 351W, 351M-400, FE, MEL and 429-460 engines will swap their distributor's internal parts (breaker plates, vacuum advance plates, pick-up coils, reluctor wheels, etc.) with Duraspark distributors, (with the possible exception of the Y-Block 272, 292, 312, 341 and 368 engines, I'M not sure about the Y-Block engines).sargentrs wrote:I don't believe the 351M/400 distributor has the right shaft length, mounting hole dia or housing to fit in the FE block and location.
