Complete Rewiring Question

Post by farmtruckman »

My 72 F100 SWB wiring is a mess! Under the dash has more splices and dead ends than a Russian spacecraft. Thinking of buying a wiring harness set and starting all over.

1. Any suggestions on whose harness to buy?
2. How big of a job is this, any hidden pitfalls?
3. This truck is a pig in a poke as it is a 72 body on a 1980 Bronco running gear with a 1980 400 small block. I would buy the harness for a 1972.

4. The question of whether or not, I am an idiot for tackling this is a moot point. I was an idiot for buying this truck in the first place but that was when I was dumb and ignorant. Still dumb but not as ignorant as before.

All creative answers welcomed. Wife hates this truck so either I get off the dime and get it on the road. Either that, or next post will be to give the thing away and concentrate on my 67. :hmm:

I am pretty sure that your best bet is going to be either order a universal harness kit or build you own. Now I am no expert but just the engine and frame combo would seem to negate being able to use just a stock 72harness as is. Otherwise chances are good it wouldnt be chopped in the first place.

I rewired my 69 before I made the up grade to 05. Half the truck is rewired for the 69 set up. The other half is wired for a 05 SEFI CVPI 4.6. It's not hard just takes time and patience. If you have a wiring diagram for both the 72 and the 80 your ahead. You'll need the 80' diagram for the engine. The 72 is for everyting else. I used "Kwik Wire" on mine. There is also "Painless" that you can get through Summit. If you want Kwik Wire's number I can send it to you. Either one has the wires pre-labeled. The column wiring isn't exactly clear since they both are set-up for GM applications.

I know this is late, but Painless finally has a kit for us! It's pricey, but looks like the real deal. You can get the kit with the switches for about $650 and without for about $550. Let me know if you get it. I'm seriously considering it.

When I got mine they didn't have all of them. So I went with the cheeper the two. I haven't had a problem with it yet.

i bought the painless harness for my 69 w/ switches i was able to go to autozone and order it through them and did not have to pay for shipping and it was right under 600. the harness is very well put together in my opinion
