IPVR question

Post by towtruckerfour »

Can I use an IPVR from a 72 instrument panel on a 70? My 68 that I stripped down actually had a 72 instrument panel in it. I thought they were too different but I guess not. My 70 F250 has a gas gauge that reads off by 1/4 tank. When it says empty, it really still has a 1/4 tank. I tried a different fuel sending unit and got the same reading. Thanks for any help.

if the other gauges are workign the ipvr is good. it can be adjusted by turning the screw on the back of it. the ipvr from the 70-72 trucks are the same. the 67-69 are slightly different on how they hookup to the instrument cluster.

Isn't the one for a 70 a one-year-only part for trucks?

I know it's shared with some of the car applications.

the 70 cluster is a one year only because of the way the plug is made. but i think the ipvr is the same as 71 and 72. it snaps into the circut board.

Not an expert here and I HATE Electrical stuff (out of fear and ignorance), but in searching for an IPVR last year for my 1970 blah blah blah (info in my signature) I found out the hard way that a 1970 is a one year only IPVR. According to Dennis Carpenter's Catalog, 1971 to 1986 IPVR's are all the same and sell for $15.00. A 1970 fits/works on a 1970 ONLY and is $85.00!!! WTH???? ...anyway not trying to thread steal but this was my experience.

Thanks for the replies. I was surprised to find a 72 dash in the 68. It makes me wonder what year the harness is that I still have? I'd swear the truck was built from spare parts. I'll try to see if I can adjust the IPVR and see if it makes a difference. Thanks guys

Does anyone know for sure if a 71/72 IPVR can be used in a 70? I have had gas guage problems since I have gotten my 70 and think I have narrowed down to the IPVR. When I first got the truck, the gas gauge was working intermittenly and most recently it woudn't go past a 1/4 when I filled it up. I hooked up an electrical light to the orange wire and it would flash a very dim light. I am thinking it was less the 5v but I don't know. Either way, I had an extra panel out of a 72 that I pulled the IPVR out of to see if it worked. The only external differnce I could see was that the mount was upside down. Other then that they appear identical in every way. I mounted the spare in my truck upside down and moved it over a little. The connection hooked right up just like the old one, but I the gas guage didn't work at all. I put the old one back in and it didn't work either. I am thinking they are both done now. I shook them both and the both have a rattle inside. Reason I want to know if I can interchange is because of the price mentioned above by forrestbump. The 70 one is hard to find and when I do it is either call for pricing or $85. The 71/72 IPVR is priced from $15-50.

Also there is an external piece that plugs into the IPVR has a wire wrapped around it covered in black tape, the smaller piece in the pic below. What is it and where can I get a new one if needed? Is it essential to the IPVR operation? all of the new IPVR's in pictures do not show that other piece.

The 70 IPVR is on the left:

Bill, I've seen NOS ones on ebay for less than $85. In fact, I have an NOS one in my stash.

What I found on my 70 was that it wasn't the IPVR that wasn't working correctly, it was the gas gauge. It would only read 3/4 full, but seemed to be accurate from there down. Just for ha-ha's when I had my transmission and a lot of my cab apart, I put a new IPVR in the cluster, and it read the same. I changed out the gas gauge, and it reads about as accurate as can be expected from any vehicle.

Not to say that adjusting the IPVR won't make it work better, but in most cases, I'm betting the gauge is the culprit. (But from your pictures, it appears you REALLY need to replace yours... )

As for interchangeability, I'm not sure if a later one will work or not. I may have a good used one for a 70 laying around if you need it, or an NOS one if you prefer. PM me if you're interested.

I forgot to mention that I did change out the gas guage already with the one out of my 67 which I know worked when I pulled it. When I got the truck the orginal gauge worked intermittenly and when I replaced got the same results. I have tried everything in the turtorial in the tech section and pulled every bit of wire I could checking for shorts. All else has appeared good. Thanks for the reply!

if you can figure out the correct part number there are several on ebay. some though. ar edefinetly not the correct ones. they are 67-69 . because they have the spades instead of the snaps. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_kw=70+f ... ccessories
