Fuse box wiring

Post by 68FORDJBM »

I need some help identifying some wires on the new fuse box for my 68 Ranger. What color are the wires going to the ING & BAT posts? Black with green stripe is the ACC, I think. All of the other wires are accounted for so I’m not sure which wires supply power from the battery/ignition. See picture below

Image

The Black with red stripe wire is all melted so assuming its shorting out. I’m hoping that that this is the source of all my TSS problems. Replacing the box seems like a good place to start considering I’ve nearly replaced everything else (TSS switch, wiring harness) 

You could try to go by this:

But I'd always found it much easier to trace the wire to confirm exactly what you're looking for-rather than taking a chance. I was always told that our wiring colors could have changed "mid year". I pretty much confirmed this when i bought one of the nice "color coded" laminated wiring diagrams for my truck.
Here's your wiring schematic for your truck if you want to trace it:

Thanks, I had the first diagram but the second leads me to think the Black/grn stripe does connect to the ACC post. I don't recall a Black with yellow but it looks like that is the one that goes to the BAT Post. The ING post doesn't appear to be used at all. Is it possible that none of the posts except the ACC post in the fuse box that I bought are used?

To me you'd have to supply power to the BAT and the ING posts of the new fuse panel, (if you've wired into those circuits).

Maybe TF or someone else can chime in here...

To put it another way, I think I only need to use the BAT & ACC posts to wire the box like my existing fuse box.

black with green #297 to 297A and Wire #21 Yellow are the only original wires going to the fuse box. the rest go to the coil and to the regulator and the neutral safety switch. http://www.fordification.com/tech/wiring/68-09.jpg

I'm pretty clear on how the existing wiring works. I'm not completely clear how this translates to the new fuse box - reference picture in orginal post.

I think I got it: Black with green (297) connect to the ACC post on the new box. The Black/yellow (37) connect to the BAT post on the new box. I'm not planning on using the the ING post. These are connected to ign sys 1 & 2 which I'm assuming to be some sort of optional add-ons.

The true test will be when everything works again:)

are you only replacing the fuse box? if so then you wouldnt need to follow there diagram. not exactly. only where the old wires hooked up would need to be connected to thier fuse box.

Thanks Fordman, yes I am replacing the fuse box and what you said is what I needed to hear to mover forward. I'm 90% confident I know which wires go where. I'm sure I'll be back here if I get stuck or if things don't work when I'm done:)

Installation went smooth and well. There were a few modifications from the drawing but everything seems to work including my turn signals!!!

Almost 3 years I spent trying to get my turn signals to work and it was the fuse box!

The only thing that doesn't work right is my left rear tail light is dim and goes out when I brake - only when the lights are on? I introduced the problem while trouble shooting my TSS.

I'll take this problem for a while:)

a dim light is a bad ground. but it shouldnt be on when the lights are off. so it is something feeding the light someplace. it could be in the turn signal switch.
