Points to Electronic

Post by lsevenpj »

I am thinking about converting my 68 460 points style distributor ignition to electronic. I've heard that the factory Duraspark ignition is a good reliable system and parts are readily available. I have access to a 460 Duraspark distributor and module. Can anyone tell me how to rewire the points style ignition system to convert it over to the Duraspark system? Will I need to change or add other components such as coil,voltage regulator,etc? I know the Petronix is good also but I was more interested in the Duraspark conversion.

Do you have or know where I can find a schematic to wire it in? I understand this system came out in 1974.

Can someone give me a rundown on all the parts I will need to convert to Duraspark II?

I am thinking of getting the Painless wiring harness (as I don't want the hassle of getting a crappy harness from a junker), and I obviously will need the ignition module. I can reuse the existing coil, I think. I will need the newer wide distributer cap and spacer.

My question is, will I need to replace my distributor as well? Should I try to source the distributor from another vehicle? If so, which ones will fit? Would I be better off just buying a re-manufactured one? Does someone have the parts I need that they want to sell?

Thanks. You guys have been a great help.

Steve,

For the distributor you will need to change out some parts from the points one you have but you can convert it over with these parts as they will fit on your old one.
You will need;
a Reluctor / Armature: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/searc ... vi=1130993

And a Pickup / Stator: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/searc ... &year=1978

The Stator is the pricey part but these parts are the same from all ford V8 distributors, from 302-460 so you can get the parts from a used one if you want. The Reluctor is the only thing that is a little tough to get off of an old distributor, as they can break getting them off if they're stuck on.
