Gm alternator

Post by whiteblur »

Hey guy, im wondering if yall have ever heard of running a later model gm alternator instead of ford? I had a man tell me he uses about a 70's model one on his bump and its all internal so all he had to do was run a power wire to the batter. please just give me some info on this. Thanks :D

I used a gm 1 wire alternator on my old mud truck.
I think it was from the '80's
You need to drill out the big hole to 7/16" so the Ford bolt fits ,
and "adjust" the spacer so the belt lines up.

That was along time ago ,now there are also more options from Ford.

i dont know much about hard easy or the best ones to use. but the main options everyone talks about are the gm 1 wire and the 3g ford alternator. if you do a quick search on the forums you can find lots of info about both of these swaps.

Ashamed to say that I ran one of these on my swamp buggy for about 8 years, (matter of fact I've still got it-was working fine when removed). Shoot me a PM if you want it just pay the shipping and a $10.00 site donation and it's yours).
Yes, the regulator is built into the alternator just like the 3G making the one wire hook up real easy. :hd:

I was running a Gm 1wire alternator for years but it couldn't keep up with the demands ! so I converted to a 3G alternator. Now everything works good ! Plus the 3g puts out more than a Gm alt.

Well I only ran the same things until I put in a stereo (no amps) electric fan. The ford 3g to me is the better swap! I did the gm stuff then did the 3G so I ended up doing the job twice .I also forgot I spent $200+ on a powermaster 180 amp alt an had to return the first one .The second one the bearing started to make noise! I would have to say again the 3G swap is my favorite an the easest
