Think I may have an electrical problem.

Post by NinJaaaaaaaaaah »

Well after school yesterday my friend came over and he said that my brake lights were still on. So i went and checked and sure enough they were. After playing around with them i figured out that if i turn the blinker one way, that light goes off but the other stays on (ex. if i put my left blinker on, that light goes off, but the right one stays on, and vice versa.) but if i turn off the blinker they both are on. I read somewhere that it could be a fuse, but i'm not sure how reliable that site is..Yes my lights are off, and if i step on the brake, the lights don't change at all, they just stay illuminated. Could leaving the blinker on when i turn off the truck cause it to blow a fuse? I know i've done it a couple times before, i think i did it when i pulled home.

Any advise is helpful, since i know just about nothing about wiring. Thanks!

I would double check the adjustment on the brake lamp switch on the brake pedal. mine will stick on sometimes if I dont pull the pedal back. I would start there at that switch. ie unplug and see if lights turn off maybe bench test it for proper operation. then proceed from there. If you turn the signals and they dont blink maybe you got a turn signal flasher problem. Id start by looking at componets before checking the hard wiring. Before I usually do any electrical work my habit is to check ALL the fuses first. sorry I probably should have just said that first. but of course on my own stuff I never do that. For a beginner check ALL the fuses first then proceed to the brake lamp switch on the brake pedal or turn flasher. post your findings so we can help.

if the light works its not a blown fuse. it could be a mal adjusted brake light switch. try to close the switch and see if it shuts them off. or maybe the switch went bad.

Mine stripped the plastic threads, and if I released the pedal hard would pop it down so the brake lights would stay on all the time. Went to NAPA and $6 later have new switch fixed the problem.

The problem is definitely in your Brake switch... either adjustment or switch is stuck on.

The stuff you said about turning the turn signals on and lights going out is the normal function of the Turn Signal Switch.

So i'm pretty sure that was the easiest problem i've ever fixed. Looked down there and saw that the switch had fallen off the pedal. Put it back on and all is good again. Thanks yall.
