3g 110 volts?
quite awhile back somewhere on the internet i read something about the 3g alternator actually made 110 or 220 volts or a high voltage. and actually was brought down internally so that it would chage a car battery. i think the person said soemthign about a larger for d car from the 80's-90's that they used. and it the one that put out this high voltage. my question is is this ture. do those alternators put out high voltage? and if so what is the high voltage. could it be used to plug in saws drills and other devices and run them. if you wired in a plug in for the drills?

No they don't put out AC voltage like that unless they are broke (all the diode gone), they only way to run 110V AC stuff like that is with a Inverter...

i've heard of kits to tap into the ac current. all alternators put out ac current and are rectified by the diodes. the voltage regulator modulates the field current to control voltage
i think the easiest way to do it these days is to buy and install a high output inverter. depending on what kind of equipment you wanted to run you'd have to select the right wattage

Side note: 120/240 is designated as low voltage.

That is what the NEC says. 600 or over high, under 600 low. When you get zapped by 440 shipboard it sure as heck feels like HIGHER than HECK!!! Lucky for me it was enough jolt to knock me down and out, instead of handing my the deadly hug.
Anyway where was I, oh ya, I agree you would need to use an inverter.

Re: 3g 110 volts?
i think this is more what i was thinking when i read about it. they were trying to redce the voltage or they were talkign baou thow it produced higher a/c voltage and then it was stepped down. i was thinking that mayeb there was a was to wire it up to get that a/c voltage out to a plug and be able to use it. sounds like alot of work that might not even be able to be done by me.BRUTUS_T_HOG wrote:i've heard of kits to tap into the ac current. all alternators put out ac current and are rectified by the diodes. the voltage regulator modulates the field current to control voltage

Re: 3g 110 volts?
as far as i know you just have to open the alternator and modify or add something. alternators can put out well over 200volts ac.
but i think its still easier and more reliable to use an inverter.

According to NFPA 70E (and, thus, OSHA), anything over 50 volts is considered high voltage.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???
That's not an oil leak
That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!

Re: 3g 110 volts?
Yeah I suppose it depends on which reference you use. In my apprenticeship we learned NEMA/IEEE. o-6oo low, 6o1-to around 8000 was medium, I know for sure 12.5kV is high voltage, and EHV starts at around 230kV...Its a little foggy since thats first year stuff and I havn't cracked those books in a while. Oh yeah I'm talking phase voltage, not line voltage. But I digress.70_F100 wrote:According to NFPA 70E (and, thus, OSHA), anything over 50 volts is considered high voltage.
