From your description it sounds like the relay you got is a "Grounding" relay same as the horn relay... the activation of this style of relay on the third post is a wire to ground to turn it on...
If you had it wired up with the power output going back to the activation wire then it would of turned on the tail and marker lights on the truck.
Do you have a Multi-meter with Ohm setting by chance?

If it Looks good and Works good then it's ok by me. Everything has its issues from time to time...
