what is this solid core wire for?

I'm trying to clean up the rats nest that is my ignition switch wiring, its a 1972 and I've already put in the right ignition switch (i think) and I've got most of it figured out except this little solid core wire. it looks like it has some writing on it too, where does it go and what does it do? It was connected to the ignition switch but I dont think that is where it is supposed to go. Its a greyish blue...

someone has added that later. i dont know of any solid core wires in these trucks. everything is stranded wire as far as i know.

nice duct tape. you may want to paint the column before it starts getting flash rust on it.

I'll dig in a little deeper to see where it goes, but it looked like it went into the harness with the rest of the wires and I think it was also getting power when I turned on the ignition.

The column and the duct tape are going away, looking to get a tilt column.

Man, that scares me when I see non-stock wires and crimp connectors under the dash of a 40ish yr. old vehicle.
You may want to look for an unmolested replacement dash loom

I agree but it was worse, it had bare wires twisted together plus the wrong type of switch, yuk! Needed two hands to crank it,

So I traced the wire back into the dash and it goes towards the passenger side harness bundle, it looks factory. I was also able to read the letters on the better section and it says "resistor do not cut or splice" Its also more of a light purple.

That would be the Exciter wire for the Alternator/Voltage regulator, it is the wire that comes on with the key in the RUN position to tell the alternator to turn on and start charging. EDIT: wire diagram to follow... so it is the same as wire #98 in this diagram http://www.fordification.com/tech/wirin ... master.jpg Ford changed it from a Black wire to a Violet wire in the later years and also it changes color when you have full gauges, it is also shown in this one as Violet http://www.fordification.com/tech/wirin ... _quick.jpg

Thanks, and those diagrams are great, been looking at them a lot lately. I really like the quick reference one with the wire colors on them, the other is better but I have to go back and forth looking at the number-color chart. Discovered another mystery wire but traced it to some kind of door mounted emissions device.
