I had the exact same problem, it started when I started to disassemble my truck for restoration. I left the battery in but had everything unbolted or removed. all the wiring was still hooked up but hanging loose near the battery. Leaving the battery hooked up with the regulator unbolted and mainly UNGROUNDED shorted the regulator and it would drain the battery dead from a full charge in less than 30 minutes, all the electrical components must be grounded or it will do the same thing to a new one. I have had no more problems after replacing the regulator and grounding everything.

are you running headers? if so my suggestion would be to check the wire running to the starter. mine actually burned on to the header and was draining the battery in no time

REALLY?? I hadnt thought to check that. Im gonoing to be working on it tommorow so I will check because I am running headers. I also have to figure out why my brand new temp guage isnt working. I think it just may be in a bad spot.

dont the sender and the gauge have to match as far as output voltages or something like that. maybe that is the gauge problem.
