Starter Solenoid
Anybody have any idea what would would cause the post on the starter side of
of the solenoid to get hot and melt lose while trying to start the engine ? I bought a
new one but wanted to find out what might have caused it before putting it on and maybe
melting it too . I appreciate any info .
Thanks , Bill

Re: Starter Solenoid
Only time I've seen a post melt off, was only partially on a friends truck, he grounded out the positive post while tightening the leads to it with his wrench... Are there any other wires to or from the solenoid that are damaged too?

Re: Starter Solenoid
I don't have any pics , I've already tossed it . When I was trying to start it , it was
slow turning like the battery was about dead but the battery is fine . I wonder if the starter
could be dragging causing the solenoid or the wire connection to heat up . I had been working
on the timing and thought I might have had it off some causing the slow cranking but that wasn't
it either . I appreciate the input .

Re: Starter Solenoid
man i lost my train of thought fo rnot being on here for a week. it got hot and melted because of either consany cranking. or a loose cable connection. i had forgot about the loose cable connection as a problem as to why that happened.

Re: Starter Solenoid
I don't, yet. I know several guys with more money than I got running around town with ford nicer than mine who have them on their motors, they have no complaints. They do recommend a starter blanket, or as one guy MADE a heat shield of some sort. I dunno if thats to protect the investment, or if there is an issue. Considering those two possibilities, I'd opt for it being protecting the investment... Jegs has one at a good price for the 390's, if thats what you are running...wcm413 wrote:If I do have to replace the starter does anyone have any experience with those torque

Re: Starter Solenoid
It's not for the truck in the picture , it's stock with a 360 .
I've got a 460 in a 67 , don't know if it takes the same starter but I'll check it out . Thanks

Re: Starter Solenoid
I got a 390 (pretty much same block as a 360) so the one I saw on jeg.com should work out fine for you...wcm413 wrote:It's not for the truck in the picture , it's stock with a 360 .

Re: Starter Solenoid
Could be but everything was tight and had been starting good up until the melt down . I found out today that
I bought the starter in 1996 and had a lifetime warranty . I had already bought the solenoid but was afraid
to put it on til I found out what melted the other one . I'm installing both tomorrow and hope that solves the
problem . Thanks for all the input .
