New Fuel Sender Not Sending Right?

I put in a new fuel sending unit, but the reading seems to be off. When the talk is full, the gauge reads 3/4. There was a little rubber "boot" on one side of the float when I go the new one. The old sender had no such "boot". Should I have taken this off before installing it?

You still have old sending unit?
Pull new one and compare where it's adjusted to. I would bet the arm needs bent a bit on new one to make it read proper.
(sounds like float needs bent DOWN a bit to make it read "fuller" when it's in the up position)
