Phantom clicking from under glove box?

Post by 72bumbee »

Just bought this truck a month or so ago. When I pull out the headlight switch, I hear a clicking noise from across the cab, like under the glove box or around the heater fan. WHat could be causing this? My neck won't flex that far and the wife and kids aren't the best troubleshooters. I really can't see where it could be coming from. I don't think there is an outside marker light on the outside, and there is no after market lights installed.

Is the truck a Camper Special (has front fender marker lights) or does it have roof marker lights? Check on the side panel just above the vent housing, there could be a relay and circuit breaker there for any of the above. It could have this and have no marker lights, it could be for the camper or trailer lights and if it has a short somewhere the circuit breaker could be tripping and resetting. :2cents:

Ditto on that info. There is a relay and circuit breaker for the factory trailer wiring just above where the bottom of the dash meets the passenger side kick panel.

I was wondering the same thing when I first bought my truck.

For what it is worth, in my '72 C/S that relay was making the clicking sound when I had a bad ground in one of the tailights. I seem to recall it was easier to see that relay with the glove box liner out.

Yes it is a camper special, and boy is it becoming a pain. It seemed to run so good at first, now it doesn't run at all!
I guess I need to start tracing wiring now.
Thank you all again.

that breaker has a power wire going to it from behind the instrument cluster. it plugs into a three ported plug. if you pull the plug the breaker will no longer get power. but nothing hooked to the breaker will get power either. cab roof lights or whatever else may be hooked into it.

So far the clicking only occurs when the switch is pulled out. It isn't bothering anything and as long as it isn't affecting anything I will put that little irritation on the back burner until I can get the dern thing running again. HAHA!
Thanks again

Gents,
Did I miss something regarding the Phantom Clicking?

What do you do to fix the problem? Replace the relay, the breaker??

well if it only does the clicking when you pull out the headlight switch its normal. My 69/72 is a true camper special (it has the relay and the special plug on the frame)it makes that clicking noise when you pull out the knob.

This is normal sound for relays
