More Wheels

Post by shrektruck »

Hey all,
My 72 F-350 has the stock disks up front. Stomping on them is like throwing out an anchor.
To the point- will 16" rims fit over them? I'm tired of trying to find 16.5" tires that don't drive like rocks. The size, loadrange and price of 16.5S is pretty limiting.
Thanks,
Matt

You should have no problems running 16s. The selection on 16.5s is getting smaller but I think you can still get TAs. I ran 31x10.50x16.5 on my 72. IMO there isn't a better tire. Is yours single tires or duals? If it is singles you will have to find the F-350 wheel with the bigger stud holes I think. Some heavy duty F-250s used them in the 80s-90s

Mine's single tire. I was curious because I need to replace the old wagon wheels, one has a spoke broken.
Aside from the safety factor the noise is really annoying. Like driving around on square wheels.
I've been looking and 16.5's seem to carry about a hundred dollar premium (for four).

one solution is dont let your kids drive  no i would die if my parents didnt let me drive. Kinda a random comment, but I dont think that in a 72 pickup you will get much improvement in sound while driving by just tire replacement. MY truck is damn loud and it has mufflers and dynamat in the interior with some 295/50 radial T/a's

Hey all,
Test fitted my new 16' today and found they fit-barely. There's about an 1/8th inch of clearance from the front caliper. Rear has room to spare. So...I'll clearance the caliper a bit and go with the 16's. Oh, the noise that concerned me wasn't tire noise, it was the sound of the wheel flexing every time that broken spoke came around.
If I can figure out how to link to the pictures I'll show the areas of concern for clearance.

1/8 inch should be plenty. It's hard to tell by your pictures but if a wheel bolts up and turns with no interfereance there shoul be no problem.
