Today I blasted and painted the pulleys and brackets for the front of the engine. Have some runs I have to touch up before I post pics.

Sorry I'm just now getting back on fordification and your posts. A page back or so, you said you were going to use the springs that go along w/ the big cam you are going to use. That is great, but what about the stock pedistal rockers? I think you are real close to their limit. So, if I were you, I would go over to 460ford.com and ask if the stock rockers will be ok with that kind of lift.

One more thing, with that low of compression and that kind of cam, you are going to giving up lots of torque. I would have gone with a milder cam for better performance and milage, but if it is sound you are after, that cam should give you a little. That big of a cam really requires more compression to work correctly.

Here is an 'ok' article on building a budget 460.

good luck on your build

Not to mention that cam on stock 75' 460 heads. Paired with a intake as you mentioned, it will be a turd with a good sounding idle. A cam that tall needs a nice single plane at the least. Your going to have to run a healthy stall to see full benifits as well. 3000+rpm at least.

A big cam is worthless if the rest of your motor/trannie/rear isint built with that cam in mind.

Goodluck on your build!!

*update*

So here is how things are looking right now...

After stripping out a head bolt hole, decided to use the other block...466 now

So the engine parts list as it stands....

Freshened up external balance crank shaft (on order)

Crane Cam #354551 226/230 duration at .050 lift, 522/530 lift

Factory rods

Pistons, KB 206 huperwhaterver with 15cc D-dish

D3VE heads, milled .020

Valve springs
Crane dual springs, spring rate 382 lbs./in.

Crane hydraulic flat tappet lifters

Double roller timing set

Edelbrock performer intake

Holly 750 cfm carb

Duraspark distributor, recurved for my build.

Desktop dyno predicts 650 hp @ 7000 rpm, and 557 ft. lbs of torque at 4000 rpm.
I figure 450 hp is more realistic.

With these pistons, I am looking right at probably 9:1 compression.
There is another piston I am interested in....KB 137, but idk if it will clear, but will give me 9.7:1 cr.

Anyone know if you can tell if a piston will clear or not before buying it?

Go over to 460ford.com and post the question. There are lots of builders over there that can answer if those pistons will work.

I'm glad you are getting some pistons to up the compression. About desk top dyno, well, you are much closer to 400hp w/ the 9:1 compression. Are you porting the D3s? Even with the performer intake, porting of the heads will help. I asume you are going with headers too correct? Also, you are on the ragged edge of what the stock pedistal mount rockers can handle lift wise. You might want to keep an eye on them or upgrade.

Actually I am going to try to up it to minimum 9.5:1 cr. I will run headers, 1 3/4" at first, then upgrade to 1 7/8". Im not porting the heads, only that cash flow right now is a issue. Same thing with trying to find a pair of D0VE heads locally. Only ones I find have already been worked over and they want like $400.

And yea, I feel I will be between 400-450 hp, and stump pulling tq.

My long term goal is that hopefully next winter I will tear down the 466 and build a 521.

Porting the D3s is easy and for sure a home job. There is a great site with instructions on how to port them. It really will help, especially with that big cam of yours. Go check out scott's site reincarnation.com He is a great head porter and has lots of pics and instructions.

Sounds like you have a great plan with the 460. Remember if you get some pistons that are 9.5 with D3s they will be up near 11 with D0VEs (C8VE C9VE).

With long tube headers and 9.5 compression, you will for sure have 400hp at the crank if it is tuned right.

good luck

An update of sorts....

I was putting the heads on the engine to keep everything from getting dirty and rusted up. I stripped the first 2 threads out of one of the head bolt holes. I am now selling that engine as a short block, but I am keeping the cam and timing set.

I purchased a good crankshaft for my other 460 block (the one that has been bored 30 over) am also going to order a set of truck connecting rods soon, and some flat top pistons.

Truck is still sitting. Later today I am headed up to north GA to look at a 1972 F100 that is being parted out. I'm getting at least the hood, if not the passenger door and the grille inserts also.

I need about $2000 to finish the engine. (that is completely finished, in the truck running)

I am still on the lookout for a C6 from a truck that will bolt to a 460. No luck yet. Also need a drive shaft.

Got just the door. Really nice shape. Armrest is in great shape. I need to post pics. He wants $150 for the hood. I noticed the grille inserts were from a 71, but the sticker on the cab says 03-1972 sooo....

Jsut a shot of the door for your enjoyment. ATM I am tying to see if I can use my hood. Hit it with metal prep this evening.

Today I stripped and POR-15 the hood. Thought I would stop the rust till I find a good replacement. I probably did the prep work kind of bass awkwards. First I hit it with some "Jasco Prep and Primer" Then let sit over night. Then today it had done some funky stuff with the paint (caused runs?!?) Sorry no pics of that. So then I hit it with some Purple Power. (Really good industrial strength cleaner) Scrubbed with a wire brush and rinsed with water. After this I hit i again with more Purple Power but let sit for about 10 - 15 min. This stuff lifted even the surface rust!

After sanding with 80 grit paper. Next comes the POR-15. Also note that my hood side emblems were too badly pitted to be salvageable. But I have some mods for them up my sleeve.
