Carb

Post by FordTruck »

The P.O of my truck put a new carb on it and I think it may be for a 351 because If I hit the gas it'll flood it's self and usually bog out and pop a little backfire out the carb. Is there a guide that I can check the numbers on it and find out everything about it. He also threw in the old carb and I think it's the orignal so I was thinking of changing the jets out but first I need to know what carbs for what. Any help?

I believe all carbs are universal for the most part and are not vehicle specific, as for the flooding out/backfiring through the carb, that sounds like a timing issue, maybe points if you have them...That would be my first guess and the first thing i would check. Points can be very tempermental and can cause alot of problems if not adjusted correctly... just my :2cents:

carbs can be sized for an engine. i don't know how to tell by the numbers but it can be done by someone who knows the numbers.

That's kinda what I thought. But would a 351carb on a 302 make that big of difference?

your problem sounds like timing to me also. a biggger carb isnt a big deal. a smaller carb will starve an engine i think.

Alright I guess I'll change my points, condenser, rotor, and cap then check my timing. What should the timing be?

8-10 someplace in there. maybe less maybe more. depends on the engine wear.
