cant keep my 302 running

Post by my1stf-100 »

hi all i just got my 71 f-100 it has a 1972 302 i have put a new edelbrock performer intake and holley 4160 carb on it and i have less power then before i have a t-18 trans i have to start out in 1st now and it bogs down easy and and the engine stalls whan i come to a stop. i have sprayed carb cleaner to see if i have a vacum leak i have checked very hose and cant find a leak i think my timing is on but i dont know ther is no timing tab on the block i have put new plugs and wires on it and all new chargeing system.its a 600cfm carb on my old intake i had a vacum block for the power brakes and steering should i just run the lines to the carb or should i run them to the vacum block any help all would be very nice thanks for your alls time

did you adjust the new carb after you put it on. the facotry settting on new carbs is just a setting to make it run when you install it. its not always correct for the engine oyu put it on.

the brake booster vacuum line goes to the vacuum block coming off of the intake.

the dist and pvc both go to the carb. the brake booster uses intake vacuum.

i have one of those timing covers and the pointer out in the garage. i haven't looked at it in awhile. but you match the timing mark on the balancer to the edge of the pointer. you match it to what your timing is uppose to be set at. being that the engine probably has some wear to it. that reading can be different to what the book says. the book reading is for a new tight engine.

Set both idle screws at 1-1/2 turns then turn one in until the engine gets sick. Turn it back out until the engine gains the most speed. Now do the same to the other side. Adjust the idle speed to where it belongs. Dizzy vacuum comes from the right side of the carb on the throttle plate housing near the front right mounting bolt.

Non adjustable floats is absolutely scary to us old Holley guys.

I have the 80508s on my truck 750CFM adjustable floats and electric choke and shiny body. I had to adjust the idle mixture and speed. Then I drove away.

a stock out of the box 600 cfm Holley w/vacuum secondaries should work just fine (untuned) with a stock 302, it should't be so badly off you'd be stalling constantly. You have either hooked up your choke wrong, or it's falling shut, or you have a vacuum leak. Harbor Freight has large easy to read vacuum gauges for like $15 that are invaluable in diagnosis. I bet if you put a vacuum gauge on there, it's jumping (not steady as it should be), or lower than acceptable.
As for your timing issue, regardless if the engine has the correct tab or chain stretch or whatever, you can keep cranking the timing advanced until it will barely turn over (when engine is hot) and then retard it some and it should be close. At least when you go through that, you should be able to tell with a fresh chalk mark on your balancer (I used the white stuff they use to correct typing errors called whiteout to mark my balancer) which pointer is closer on your timing tab.
You said new charging system are you sure it's charging? An alternator that isn't charging will certainly make a vehicle run like crap until it just lays down. They'll stall at low speeds if you don't keep them loaded up and headlights and things will be dimmer than normal and they won't hardly get out of their own way.

Can I ask why the AVS? :? There is reason that they were discontinued years ago. There is also a reason why Holley never stopped production.

Quick not as altitude goes up idle vacuum goes down. At 5000 ft 15 is a good number.
