Ever wonder why a curicuit tester has a point on it?

Post by Merlin68F100 »

Guy stops me in traffic the other day and tells me I have no break lights. So yesterday I figure I will get it fixed.
The testing,
All lights work, accept the break lights.
4 way flashers work.
Turn signals work.

So I ground my spark chaser and touch the hot side of the break switch, lights on.

I press the peddle and touch the other side of the break switch, lights on.

Must be the wire to the rear of the truck.

Long story short I look\feel\wiggle my way back to the tail light buckets. Remove the buckets and clean the grounding contact points before reinstalling them.

So now its 95 deg plus and I am back in the cab scratching my brain. :? I figure why not replace the switch, its got to be original equipment, and for a few buck I can be sure the issue is somewhere south of the switch.
When I start to remove the switch the wire to the tail light doesn't move like the wire on the other side. I close the switch and touch the contact AGAIN....lights on. Then I stab the wire 2 inches up the line. NO LIGHT!!!!! the wire had broken right at the stake-on but the insulation was still holding onto the crimp.
And that, boys and girls, is why there is a pointed end on the circuit tester. Thank you, and good night.

Me too, I thought it was for my routine blood letting. Then I got smart and got one of those little plastic clothspin thingys that hols the wire and gives a small hole to probe through.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.
