As far as checking for a ground, I use a test light and connect it to a known hot wire, then just poke around for ground to make sure it is all good.
I got lucky when I found mine as I was actually looking for bad wires and, when I went to remove the rear light the screw gounded and everything worked right. Just had to make sure they all were grounding properly then.

And to top it all off, the switch is still not always up to the task.
After fixing the grounds, I have ALWAYS done 1 of 2 things...
1. Relay'ed the circuit.
2. Replaced the stock switch with a Motorcraft from a 69 Ford with 4 headlights (doesn't really matter, but the mustang one has an odd spacer that will require some extra work).
The extra current draw of the 4 headlights required a higher amperage CB in the switch....
The factory designed headlight harness just isn't up to the task after 30+ years.
