302 rear main seal

Post by unclejtl »

hello, I've got a 71 w a 302 and a 4spd and am going to install a new clutch. I thought while I had it apart I would replace the rear main seal. When looking at diagrams it appears to be a two piece seal, the lower half being in the bearing cap.

Do I have to remove the pan and the cap to install this seal? or is it a simple pry out and tap in the new one?

I'm trying to have all the parts before I start this project.

thanks

yep...drop the pan & rear main cap. Then drive the old one out & install the new unit. Hint here...when installing the seal, don't install it flush with the surface of the main cap. Install it so the seal sticks out about 1/4 in on one end. Do the same on the part of the seal in the block. That way, the parting lines of the seal are not on the same plane, reducing the chance of leaking

Finally at this point. Trans and clutch out and flywheel is at the machinest and the seals will be in tomorrow.

Do I undo the rear main bearing cap only, or loosen all of them?

Will the pan (front sump type) have enough room to slide out? do I need to undo the oil pump?

thanks
