Intermitant wipers

Post by willowbilly3 »

I scored the intermitant wiper unit off an 84 yesterday. Have any of you put one of these on? I have read about it here or over yonder in the past. It seems like someone said they would plug in and work through the mid 80s. BTW did anyone see the price that one of these broght on ebay a couple weeks ago? I last saw it at over $60 I think.

This all perfect except it covers using the 78-9 system and I have am 84. It all installs just the same but there is a modification needed to the wiring/connectors to make the washers work. I need to figure that out yet.

I think it goes like this:

Truck harness --- wiper switch/relay pigtail

orange/white --- black/green

orange/yellow & brown/green --- EMPTY

green --- black/white

blue --- blue

black --- black

white --- white

red --- red

Sure is a lot of tech discussion going on in the "general", pointing at myself too...

sorry about that Keith :(

Yeah, sorry, I started it all. That is why I took the question to the right place when I started digging into it.

Man I haven't visited FTE for months. Don't make me go over there to find the solution.

Here is how my wires matched up.

Truck harness to wiper switch/relay pigtail

orangle/white - black/green dash

orange/yellow &
brown/green - EMPTY

lime - black/white

blue - blue

black - black

white - white

red - red

My washer has a lime and a black wire coming from it. I don't think the black comes back to the plug, but I am not for sure. The relay is a 1974 model and it cam out of a 1976 Bronco.

The 84 switch connector is empty adjacent to the green wire that goes to the washer. I will get back at it today and try and figure it out.

Well this thing has me stumped. None of the wires seems to power up when I push the washer. I even tried the ground strap thinking maybe the washer switched on the cold side through that. Nada.
Basically I have power at three wires when the key is on and on all of them when I turn on the wipers. The wipers and delay work perfectly.
I might just end up with a seperate push button to run the washers. I have a hole by the choke a small one would fit in.

The following addendum has been added to the wiper delay tutorial which should answer your question:

"NOTE: As described above, the '73-'79 wiper delay units are a plug-in swap into the '67-'72 wiring harness. Everything will work as intended.
However, in 1980 the wiper delay switch's plugs were slightly re-designed. The '80-'86 units will still plug into the '67-'72 trucks' wiring harness and all normal wiper functions will work, but one wire on the delay unit (the power wire to the washer pump) will need to be moved to supply power to the washer pump.
When you connect the main wiring harness to the wiper delay switch's harness, you'll notice that the lime-colored wire (the washer pump's power wire) coming from the main harness does not have a corresponding tab in the wiper delay switch's harness. You'll need to move the black/white wire from the wiper delay switch harness to the slot that will connect it to the lime green wire of the truck harness."

Hope this helps. :D

I finally got back to it and 68F250 was right, green to black white. Keith you may want to update the tech article. I am not sure when the cut off year would be but I got this one from a 1984. That makes it a lot easier to scrounge a used one. Finding a 78-79 with delay might be a little tough in some areas, like here.
