EZ wiring harness questions

Post by jte8969 »

I am installing an EZ harness in a 67. there are a few wires that I dont know where to put. The first one is the alternator excitor, its white. another is the alternator power, red, soleniod power, red as well, and ign switch, which is green. They all come from the fuse panel into the engine compartment, I just dont know exactly how to put them together.

I may be able to help with one....
The first one is the alternator excitor, its white.
This can go a couple of ways... If you have the Idiot light on the dash for the "Alt" then this wire would go to power it and the wire out of the light goes to the voltage regulator for the alternator... If you have the gauge then this wire would go to the voltage regulator but it needs to be a resistance wire or have a resistor in line.

The others could go different ways depending on what there purpose is for in the fuse box... kinda need more info...

alt excite wire goes to the I post on your regulator. From what I am told (mind you it could be wrong!) is that since the stock wiring is gone, it no longer has to be a resistance wire. Alternator power goes straight to the alternator battery plug, and splices off to the A post on the regulator. I spliced it right under the regulator to keep the wires all together. The solenoid power wire goes to the battery side of the solenoid, BUT this is where your FUSIBLE LINK goes. It crimp connects to the end of that solenoid power wire. The ignition switch wire, what does it say. There are quite a few ignition switch wires.

I am going to post pictures of what I have done so far later today. I have to button up the lighting wires, turn signal wires, hazard wires, and ignition stuff. Mine is a rebel-wire wire harness, it's just about the same.

I have so many questions about the wire harnes that is starting to confuse me. I think a lot of this is going to be trial and error. Also, I am putting in the original ingition switch that goes on the dash, but the connections are not labled, Anyone have any idea what goes where on that?? Thanks for all your help gentlemen

the ignition switch wire that goes to the engine compartment is the ign swtch start wire. Where does that go??

That would be the wire to the solenoid to activate the starter. #32 on this diagram. http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... rging2.jpg

You can find all the different wire diagrams here... http://www.fordification.com/wiring.htm

Just some info on the excite wire and resistors read them as you wish...
http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72043

Not ford but this alternator and regulator work the same http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?p=304289

Do your own search and conclusions, but Ford has it that way from the factory and is needed for the regulator. (either idiot light or resistive wire for gauge) both do the same thing, a light is a resistor. :2cents:

I also have one wire that comes into the engine compartment that says "pos coil," Does that mean 2 wires are supposed to connect to the positive coil plug??

hahahaha, this sounds SOOOO familiar. When I wake up in the morning I will take pictures of everything I have done so far. Ignition switch and lights, where I spliced, whats connected where and all of that.

Sound good?

Okay, you have a seperate coil wire than what I had I guess, I had a wire that went over to my solenoid to one of the posts, I don't remember. and it spliced over to the coil positive. I am going to get you some pictures/diagrams/write ups tonight.

*****I am NOT responsible for any damage done, PLEASE test things BEFORE hooking them up. This can be done via 4 hands, a DMM, and the understanding of continuity! Also, the following colors are for a 72, years may vary!*****

Here is what I've got. I'm not going to guarantee this to be 100% as I have yet to crank the truck, BUT nothing has blown up yet. And I am guessing it would have by now. My coil wire does get warm, but I believe that's a matter of the old wire being to short, the truck only being in accessory, and I have been told with the truck running and the coil working it would actually absorb some of that energy from the wire, therefore cooling the wire. Here goes..

Ignition Switch
Stock | Name of Wire
Yellow | Ignition Switch Power
Black/Green | Ignition Switch Accessory
Red/Blue | Ignition Switch Start------------->to LEFT solenoid post (NOT battery post of solenoid)
Red/Green | Ignition Switch Ignition
Pink | Coil-------------------------> to RIGHT solenoid post (NOT starter post of solenoid)

Lights
Stock | Name of Wire
Brown (2) | Park lights and Tail lights
Black/Red | Headlight Power
Red/Yellow | Dimmer Power

*Alternator Power wire goes to Alternator Power post, splices to "A" post on regulator
*Solenoid Power wire WITH FUSEABLE LINK goes to battery side of solenoid.

***I did NOT run dome lights, or courtesy lights as all that will be lost when done, though I do believe the black/blue on the light switch is for just that, test it first with a DMM.

I am posting this pic so you understand my whole left and right post of solenoid deal. The PURPLE wire is "Ignition switch Start" and the Pink is "Coil"

The way I spliced my wires (to be clean) was right under the solenoid (for alternator), and I spliced the coil wire in a crimp ring terminal right at the post of the solenoid to go over to the coil, though I could have use 2 ring terminals, 1 is cleaner looking IMO.

The second and third pictures show how I routed my wires. I could have kept them in the dash, but I really didn't have anywhere to secure them once the dash pad is gone as those little stock wire holders break when you take them off typically. The third pic shows my headlight wires and crap, going over the core support, it seemed like the best place for them while keeping them not showing through the grill like they used to!!!

They are going bye bye. The whole assembly. The truck won't see much "harsh weather" driving, so I will be shaving the cowl and removing everything. They did work though :) so the setup will be for sale when I get to that point. It looks like my truck has eyes in that picture haha.
