igntion switch wires & wiper switch wires

Post by layedout72 »

Can anyone tell me which wires are the ignition switch power, ignition switch ignition, ignition switch accessory, coil and ignition switch start?

The sheet I have for my harness doesn't have the correct wires, I figured it wouldn't, it's just a guide really. So I need to know where to put things when I wire it up tomorrow. I may be asking the same for turn signals tomorrow as well haha.

Sorry for the questions!

I'm guessing (based on your username) that you're requesting this info for a '72 model? ;)

This image used for testing the ignition switch is from the '72 factory shop manual:

That should do it! haha. Thanks a lot Keith. Your full of info for these trucks, I wouldn't be anywhere with the truck without this website.

Okay, on my ignition switch, heres what I have. The stock switch has a proof/battery wire both wired into one terminal, with another proof, as shown above. My wiring harness has these wires: ignition switch ignition, ignition switch power, ignition switch accessory, ignition switch start, and coil.

Am I thinking right when I say the power wire goes where the battery power is stock? The coil goes into the proof where just the proof went stock? or battery and coil together?

Also I looked up the wiring for a wiper switch and heres what I have.

Supposed to have blue, white, red, black, orange, white, black/white, and black.
Image

the only problem is, is my black/white is green and my black is orange/yellow & black.....is that the wrong diagram for a 72?

okay, back on the ignition switch. both of these (wiper and ignition) have me lost. The 1970 diagram (similar to mine I am guessing) has one wire going to the coil, two to the starter solinoid, one to the fuse box, one to the regulator, one to the dual brake warning switch, and one to some carb throttle solenoid for trucks with AC. I don't have AC, only heat.

So, to say the least, I'm confused. ALL of these wires that I am naming that are in the harness (from earlier i mean) ALL run FROM the fusebox, they are not loose wires that I can run where I want.

Heres the diagram, with no specific colors, just so you can see where things go.

Image

This means that the violet and green together, is for the coil and AC...which I don't have, but does it include the heater needing to be plugged in there? The puke green colored goes to the brake warning switch. The green one, goes to the starter relay, getting constant power I believe. The tan one goes to the voltage regulator. Blue goes to fuse panel. Red goes to front plug post on relay.

I understand all this but my harness has it running all back to the fuse box and the only wires going to the passenger side are alt wires. Which are...The Alt Excite wire, which is white, they show it going from the fuse box to the regulator. Alt power, which is spliced to the alt and regulator. Coil, thats obvious as to where it goes. I'm so lost as to how to wire this up....i'm sure I am making it 100x harder than it is.

I am rewiring the old plugs, yes. We will leave it there lol. It's a new harness, stock plugs. I can take whatever pictures you would need to help.

IT looks like everything runs straight back to the fuse box, should it do that, or run like it was stock? That's what has me confused other than placement. I just don't see how it would work like it did stock, if it runs to different places....

I have my stock harness still, that I can use to reference. It is just that the stock harness had things going where I showed them in color there on the 70 harness diagram. The harness I have bought, it looks as if they all go back down to the fuse box. I don't know if cutting those wires and running them where they go stock will mess up any other circuits or not. And if that's even what needs to be done???

ok eveything in your truck come from or goes to the stock fuse block. i bet as extra saftey the wires out to everything goes out through the fuse box.

i would wire the circuits into your harness plugs. cuase i'm sure your new harness has coresponding wires that come from the box to the items powered from the switches.

Ok... What kind of instruction / wire diagrams did it come with? This could go a couple different ways...
1. Is that this is set up so that the wires out of the fuse block are fused and designed for a switch to be used in line to turn them on / off... like a race car is set up.
2. It is simular to the Painless Wire Harness for universal connection... I found this link on line for theres here http://www.painlessperformance.com/Manu ... Manual.pdf look at page 33 at the wire diagram there... Might or might not help... (Yours you got should have come with a diagram like this to help out) There is other good diagrams / info stuff in this same manual specific to Fords that may help some also...

Sorry not much / better help...
