Check brake switch which activates when brake pedal is pressed. The switch is attached to the pedal assembly.

Look at this diagram it's for a 70.. but from the color codes on the 72 it looks to be the same... http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... ghts01.jpg
Basically looks like your problem is in the Turn signal switch or the wire in the column... Number (10) the Green - Red strip wire... This is the wire that comes from the brake switch which is (810) Black - Red stripe (which you said has power) so the problem is either; where this wire is in the connector at the column, or inside the column, or it's a problem in the turn switch itself..
Inside the turn switch this wire is connected to the rear brake lights you will see that the emergency flasher is also wired to this same wire by (810A) so when your emergency’s are on it feeds into here to make the rear lights flash...
So this points to the same problem areas that I mentioned above...

You can take a test light to this Green - Red striped wire going up the column and see if it is a problem with the connector. If that is ok then you'll have to pull the steering wheel off and check out the switch...
Note: if this (10) Green - Red stripe wire that I have mentioned here is not that color, just see what color wire the (810-810A) Black - Red stripe wire on the connector goes too...

Hope this helps...

I'm not "Brand Loyal" Ford-Chevy-Dodge-Toyota I have them all, one even cross mixed...
If it Looks good and Works good then it's ok by me. Everything has its issues from time to time...
