I've seen it done. I posted one a while back in the parts-for-sale that was on ebay. It had been recovered with the speaker holes covered over. Looked pretty clean, actually... especially if you aren't going to put a speaker back under there.

Hey Super Mike...
Yeah, I lost the bid on that one... that is probably the one that made me want one like it...
I have also thought about the tray idea, but have not found anything that would fit those dimensions.
There was a pad on e-bay recently that someone had carefully cut out the whole speaker area and replaced it with some black screen. It didn't look too bad in the pics... but was wondering how it looked in real life...
<------ heck, even I look pretty dang good when I'm shrunk down to a 1" x 1" thumb nail <---------
take care,

That's an interesting idea. I was actually considering getting the plastic cover and drilling out a series of small holes to move the speakers out towards the doors. It's a shame our trucks only came with one speaker...

Just an idea...
Before I would drill any holes in a dash cover... I'd look at some other options
I was thinking about doing this...
With the dash pad off you can mount an 8" sub where the single speaker was.
You can install single 6x9 boxes at the bottom of door so they just clear the the door thresh hold. If you make your own boxes, you can make them a little smaller than the regular ones. because of where they sit when the door is closed, they don't interfer with leg room. And you don't have cut up door panels. On the rear roof pillers mount some of the piazo mini tweeters to give the full sound range...
I am going to do a version of this on my '68 F-250. I am installing a nice set of buckets that I got out of a Grandam. I have already removed the behind the seat gas tank. I am going to use the tank mount on top and go about 3/4 of the way to the floor.. which will leave 9 inches or so at the bottom... the whole upper area is gonna be a speaker box that will have 2 10's or 2 12's mounted and the amp for them.
I plan on using some of that stretch netting across the whole bottom so I can put things in there without them rolling around.
The rest of the system will be set up the same...
Just an idea....
