Clear coating aluminum

Have any of you had experience clear coating over polished aluminum trim? I had my '70 grille polished due to hazing and some light surface scratches. In the process, the factory anodization was removed and I understand that if you don't wax the bare surface regularly that it will haze over. What about clear coating it? I suppose I could have it powder coated clear but I think I've given enough money to the local powder coating company to put his kid through college. Any thoughts?

A little off topic, but how did they remove the anodized coating and scratches and what did it cost ya? if you dont mind my asking?

They used a chemical to remove the anodizing and then buffed the shell. It cost me $125 and included removing one very small ding in the top leading edge.

You could check out a product called "evershield" at www.aircraftfinishing.com It's the exact same product as "zoopseal" but is about half the price.. comes from the same factory, etc. I use it alot on polished aluminum and it really helps seal it and keep it easy to keep clean.

Yes, they say they can powder coat clear, but at about $90 I'm looking for a more reasonable alternative. Joe, what is the "Steel Wheel" color you refer to? Thanks for the input.

Geez,Kent,I'm glad you asked,'cuz I went out and checked and what I used was SEM light titanium metallic 'Bumper coater'....I really like the matte finish....I used it on the bumper w/ a clearcoat and it looks like a new bumper instead of a repainted one....The plastic grill inserts for 1970 were molded in a gray/silver metallic,and mine had yellowed over the years...I painted them with this paint and they look new....a little detail that makes the truck a bit more eye-catching....

'Steel wheel' is a color I get at the local CheckerAuto to paint things like starters,power steering pumps to give 'em that new look...It has a nice metal-like finish...
